Driven by Electric Beats: Nissan Ariya-inspired lofi music LP dropped for National Vinyl Record Day

August 9, 2024

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In recognition of National Vinyl Record Day (Aug. 12) and supporting the National Museum of African American MusicOpens in a new tab. (NMAAM), Nissan is releasing a limited-edition LP of lofi music called Driven by Electric Beats.

Inspired by driving in the morning and evening, the album is a collaboration between Dope CandiOpens in a new tab. and Harold "HB" BurnsOpens in a new tab. – two artists from Nissan's Electric Beats program, an initiative that works with Black musicians to promote diversity in music production.

Limited to just 1,000 copies and priced at $23, the album is available online and in-store at The Groove Nashville and NMAAM's Amplify StoreOpens in a new tab..

Following the success of the Lofi Girl animated filmOpens in a new tab., a four-hour, single-shot ride-along of a woman driving an Ariya through a Japan-inspired landscape, Nissan takes lofi music and animation from the digital into the physical world.

Printed on the Driven by Electric Beats vinyl is a zoetrope pattern that animates while the record spins. Artwork on either side of the picture disc features a man and woman behind the wheel of the Ariya, nodding heads and tapping fingers to the beats.

Sonic serenity

The two tracks of the Driven by Electric Beats album are inspired by morning and evening driving and the dual personality of the powerfully peaceful Nissan AriyaElectric Dawn motivates and energizes while Nightscape is calming for the listener to decompress at the end of the day.

Nissan returned to the lofi genre for the potential wellbeing it can help provide listeners. Studies indicate lofi music helps with concentration, lowers stress and anxiety, and may even improve mental performance.1

At the end of each side, a locked groove contains an audio sample featuring the driving sound of Nissan's all-electric Ariya. This loop plays peacefully until the listener stops the record – an 'Easter egg' made possible by the uniqueness of the vinyl format.

"In 2023 we had this incredible reaction to the Ariya Lofi Girl commercial. It was four hours long, but people kept coming back to watch it – over 18 million times! There were so many comments about how the music and animation had a calming effect," said Marisstella Marinkovic, vice president and chief marketing officer, Nissan U.S.

"With the Driven by Electric Beats LP project, we wanted to support some fantastic initiatives but also provide vinyl fans with tracks they can turn to for a boost of concentration, motivation or relaxation. That's the amazing quality of music – the ability to bring us together and create positivity all around."

Passion with purpose

The Driven by Electric Beats album supports the NMAAMOpens in a new tab., an establishment that Nissan has partnered with for various culture-uplifting efforts. Opened in Nashville in 2021, NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating the many genres created, influenced and inspired by Black musicians.

Nissan’s legendary GTP ZX-Turbo to be showcased at Monterey Car Week

During the 1980s, amid a wave of technological advancements, one vehicle emerged as a standout in the racing world: the Nissan GTP ZX-TurboOpens in a new tab.. Competing in the International Motorsports Association (IMSA) GT Series from 1985 to 1990, this car embodied Nissan's determination to outpace the competition.

Originally built by Lola Cars in the UK and developed by Electramotive Engineering in California, the GTP ZX-Turbo became a powerful symbol of Nissan's dedication to excellence in motorsports.

"We were constantly pushing the limits, especially enhancing the car's aerodynamics," said Chris Willes, who joined Electramotive Engineering in 1986. From the outset, the project was recognized as a game-changer for Nissan.

In a fitting tribute to its storied legacy, the GTP ZX-Turbo will make a special appearance off the track at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion during Monterey Car Week from August 14 to 17, 2024. The occasion arrives 35 years after its win at the IMSA Constructor's Championship, and coincides with a number of notable anniversaries for the Nissan ZOpens in a new tab.: 2024 marks the 55th anniversary of the sports car debuting as the Datsun 240ZOpens in a new tab. in 1969; the 35th anniversary of the Nissan 300ZX (Z32)Opens in a new tab. in 1989; and the 15th anniversary of the Nissan 370Z in 2009. Fittingly, a Nissan Z Heritage EditionOpens in a new tab. will also be on display.

Dominance on the track

The GTP ZX-Turbo quickly made its mark on the racing world, particularly during the 1988 season, when legendary drivers Geoff BrabhamOpens in a new tab. and John MortonOpens in a new tab. drove it to victory, defeating formidable competitors like Porsche and Jaguar.

Their first major win of the season at the Atlanta Journal Constitution Grand Prix was quickly followed by another triumph at West Palm Beach. Despite early challenges in previous years with tire performance, a switch to Goodyear tires at the beginning of the season allowed the GTP ZX-Turbo to fully unleash its immense power.

"It was unbelievable. We won at Atlanta, then at West Palm Beach," said Ashley Page, the team crew chief who joined the project in 1984. "I knew from the start that this project was going to be something special."

Under the leadership of Electramotive founder Don Devendorf, the team refined the car's aerodynamic design, chassis design and engine electronics -- key factors in its success. These innovations helped the GTP ZX-Turbo secure the IMSA Constructor's Championship in 1989, a title it successfully defended in 1990, cementing Nissan's status as a force to be reckoned with in motorsports.

Willes wrote about the successes of the GTP ZX-Turbo project in his book, "Developing a Champion: The Electramotive Nissan GTP Story."Opens in a new tab.

A lasting legacy and a triumphant return

Nearly 40 years after its debut, the GTP ZX-Turbo remains a celebrated icon of racing excellence. The original chassis #8801 is currently being meticulously restored at Z Car GarageOpens in a new tab. in San Jose, ensuring that the legendary vehicle is preserved for future generations. In recognition of its impact, IMSA announced earlier this year that Brabham and the GTP ZX-Turbo will be inducted into the 2024 IMSA Hall of FameOpens in a new tab. in October.

The rare opportunity to witness the GTP ZX-Turbo up close at Monterey Car Week in August is a celebration of Nissan's enduring commitment to innovation and excellence in motorsports, reminding the world of the brand's rich racing heritage.

"Our journey with the GTP ZX wasn't just about building a race car. It was about pushing the limits of what was possible, both on and off the track," said Willes.

Nissan trialing cool paint technology

Embedded metamaterial can lower cabin temperatures and reduce energy usage, taking the heat out of summer.
YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan has been trialing an innovative automotive paint aimed at helping lower a vehicle’s ambient cabin temperature in summer and reduce the energy usage of the air-conditioning system.
Developed in partnership with Radi-Cool, a specialist in radiative cooling products, the paint incorporates metamaterial, synthetic composite materials with structures that exhibit properties not usually found in nature.

The project is part of Nissan’s pursuit of differentiated innovations that empower journeys and to help create a cleaner more sustainable society.

In November 2023, Nissan commenced a 12-month feasibility trial at Tokyo International Air Terminal at Haneda. In collaboration with Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd., Radi-Cool Japan, and All Nippon Airways (ANA) airport service, Nissan’s cool paint has been applied to a Nissan NV100 service vehicle operated by All Nippon Airways (ANA) airport services.

With its large, open tarmac, Haneda airport provided the perfect environment to conduct real-world evaluation of the paint’s performance under an exposed high-temperature environment.

Although still in testing phase, the results to date have been impressive. Parked side-by-side under the sun, a vehicle treated in Nissan’s cool paint has shown yields of up to a 12-degree Celsius reduction in exterior surface temperatures and up to 5-degree Celsius cooler interior, compared to a vehicle featuring traditional automotive paint.

The paint’s cooling performance is particularly noticeable when a vehicle is parked in the sun for an extended period. A cooler cabin is not only more pleasant to enter, but also requires less air-conditioning run-time to cool the cabin to a comfortable temperature. This helps reduce load to the engine, or in the case of an electric vehicle, draw on the battery. In both powertrains, an improvement in efficiency is expected, as well as occupant comfort.

The metamaterial embedded within Nissan’s cool paint features two microstructure particles that react to light. One particle reflects near-infrared rays in the sunlight that would typically cause molecular level vibrations within the resin of traditional paint to produce heat.

The second particle enables the real breakthrough. It creates electromagnetic waves, that counteract the sun's rays, redirecting the energy away from the vehicle into the atmosphere. Combined, the particles in Nissan’s cool paint reduce the transfer of heat into surfaces such as the roof, hood, doors and panels.

Leading the development is Dr. Susumu Miura, senior manager and expert at the Advanced Materials and Processing Laboratory, Nissan Research Center. He played a leading role in Nissan’s award-winning noise-reducing acoustic material, and has dedicated much of his career at Nissan to exploring ways to make cars quieter, cooler and more efficient.

“My dream is to create cooler cars without consuming energy” explained Miura. “This is especially important in the EV era, where the load from running air-conditioning in summer can have a sizable impact on the state of charge,” he said.

While radiant cooling paint isn’t new, it is typically used for buildings and structures. It’s often very thick, requiring application by a paint roller. Devoid of any clear topcoat, it can leave a chalky residue when touched.

Key challenges Miura had to consider when developing an automotive version, was to ensure it could incorporate a clear topcoat, be applied via a spray gun (not a roller), and meet Nissan’s rigorous internal standards for paint quality.

Since commencing the development in 2021, Miura and his team have tested over 100 samples, and are currently evaluating a thickness of 120 microns, approximately six times thicker than typical automotive paint. They have confirmed resistance to salt and chipping, peeling, scratches, chemical reactions, along with color consistency and repairability. As development progresses, Miura and his team continue to explore thinner options that deliver the same level of cooling performance.

While the testing and development is ongoing, for Miura and his team, the hope is that it can one day be offered for special orders and in a variety of colors.

Miura sees strong potential, particularly for light commercial vehicle applications such as vans, trucks and ambulances that spend most of the day out driving.
